Why Selling Used Cars To Friends Is Never A Good Idea
A few months ago I sold my old car to a neighbour who I was on friendly terms with. This wasn’t my idea but the man in question approached me when he saw that I’d bought a new car; he wanted to know what I was going to do with the old car.
I would have actually thought of him as more than just a neighbour because we often went out to the local bar and socialised there and our wives were quite friendly too. When he suggested that he buy my old car it seemed like the ideal solution. The fact that I would not have any hassle trying to sell the car made up for the fact that he was offering me less than I had planned to sell the car for. As soon as we had shook on the deal, we began to have problems.
I had to spend at least an hour on the phone with my neighbour on the night he bought the car with him putting a lot of strange questions to me. I realised then that selling to this man was a mistake. It was as if he thought I had done him out of money with some of the questions he was asking me. I was a bit annoyed with this and the call ended with me telling him that he could have the money back if he brought back the car; to which he replied by slamming the phone down. I am not a car salesman and have never sold a car before but I really thought that once you had sold the car, that was it.
Another friend of mine approached me and warned that this neighbour was spreading nasty rumours about me. He was telling everyone that would listen that I had cheated him out of a lot of money for a used car that was a piece of junk. However he denied it all when I approached him about it. Since then we have not spoken to each other at all and my poor wife is being ignored by his wife. So take my advice - do not sell a used car to anyone who you consider to be a friend.
