Had A Car Accident - Now What?

On a beautiful summer afternoon you decided to drive around in the town in your car. A car abruptly emerged out of nowhere and before you could press the brakes, your car bumps into the rear end of the other car. You start getting concerned about the repercussions of the accident and any financial ramifications it might have.

Once you are sure about your own well being, check on the driver of the car you hit. Apologize and offer your assistance. If he is physically well, then try to acquire as much information from him as possible under the circumstances. This should include his name, address, license plate number, telephone number, and his insurance information like the insurance company and policy number. In case the driver isn’t covered by insurance, then get the license plate number and the type of vehicle, the make, model and color.

If you can find any witnesses to the event, then try getting their names, addresses and phone numbers. This information may prove extremely important at the time of deciding the liability insurance based on who was at fault in the car accident. However, if the accident is of serious nature and if police is summoned to the scene of the accident, then you might not be in a position to acquire the necessary information. In such an event, you should take note of the police report number. You will need to provide this report number to your auto insurance company.

Contact your insurance company at the earliest and inform them about the accident. Provide them the report number so that they can get the contact information of the other person and the details of the accident information from the police report. Informing them in advance will help your case, if you were the one responsible for the accident.

It’s important that you go through this process irrespective of whether you consider yourself responsible for the accident or not. This is because most insurance providers need you to report accidents to them. Moreover, if you fail to inform them about the accident, then you may have problems getting a new insurance policy later. Thus, make sure you contact your insurer and inform him about the accident.
