Used Cars – Selling To Friends Is A Mistake
When I wanted to get rid of my old car I decided to sell it to one of my neighbours who I was quite friendly with. I had not planned on doing this but when my neighbour realised I had bought a new car, he came up to me to find out what my plans were for my old car.
We had been fairly good friends up until this; we socialised in the local bar a lot and our wives also got on well together. When he suggested that he buy my old car it seemed like the ideal solution. The fact that I would not have any hassle trying to sell the car made up for the fact that he was offering me less than I had planned to sell the car for. As soon as we had shook on the deal, we began to have problems.
On the evening that this neighbour had bought the car we had a long phone call with him asking all types of odd questions. So it was then that I knew I had made a major mistake selling my car to my neighbour. Some of the questions he was putting to me made it seem as though he felt I had swindled him out of money. I actually got quite annoyed and told him to bring the car back and I’d refund his money he slammed down the phone. I have no experience with selling used cars but assumed that once the deal is done the deal is done.
One of my other friends came up to me and told me that there were vicious rumours being spread about me by this neighbour. He was telling everyone that would listen that I had cheated him out of a lot of money for a used car that was a piece of junk. I tackled the neighbour about it but he denied the whole thing. We haven’t talked since and his wife is now ignoring my missus. My advice to people is never to sell used cars to friends or neighbours.
