Selecting The Proper ATV For Your Specific Needs

Many people will tell you that all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), also known as quad bikes or quads, are designed and built to be workhorses for tasks on farms and building sites. However, in reality ATVs are used as much as fun and sports vehicles as they are for more serious matters.

Basically, an ATV resembles a motorbike with four large wheels. The rider straddles the all-terrain vehicle and steers it with handlebars. The big, thick wheels and strong engines, generally around 500cc make them ideal for driving on any kind of terrain. However, quad bikes can range anywhere in engine size from 50cc to one thousand cc.

Quad bikes are made by many of the big motorcycle makers, such as Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki. There are 2 main kinds of quads – utility and sport. Utility quads are meant for practical use such as on the farm, while sport ATVs are designed for leisure activities.

There are a few big differences between the 2. Sports quad bikes are more lightweight and faster and are designed for jumps and stunts.

Utility all-terrain vehicles are slower and weigh more, and are generally meant for traversing rougher terrain and for dragging heavy objects.

Other popular types of quad bikes are youth quads, for children and teenagers, and side-by-sides, which have two seats and generally have roll bars, so are more akin to buggies.

There is a large range of accessories on sale for ATVs and quad bike owners. These include safety gear such as helmets, eye wear, chest protectors and protective gloves, as well as shirts, shorts and jerseys.

Despite the wide availability of protective equipment, ATVs are thought by many to be hazardous. There have been some casualties and injuries associated with all-terrain vehicles, but sometimes because of improper use.

However, since they can attain high speeds on rough terrain, safety should always come first. Here are some tips on how to stay safe on an ATV:

* Take it slow, especially when you are starting out. ATVs do not behave like cars or motorbikes, and have a tendency to drift at high speeds. Familiarize yourself with how to handle the all-terrain vehicle before increasing your speed.

* Always wear a helmet and chest protector.

* If you use your ATV for recreational use, start off on easy terrain. Find some beginners’ tracks with no excessively steep slopes or rugged surfaces until you develop your ATV skills.

* Keep your quad bike in top condition. As with any vehicle they require frequent servicing. Always check brakes and tires before you take your ATV out, and regularly check cables, oil, coolant, chain and filters.

All-terrain vehicles generally cost around $5,000 to ten thousand dollars and there is a big demand for second hand vehicles. So, whether you need a workhorse or a sports all-terrain vehicle, you should be able to find the right quad for you.
