A Guide To Honda Civic Exhaust Systems

Upgrading your Honda Civic exhaust can be costly and time consuming if you don’t know what you are doing. But don’t panic if you do it the right way the first time it shouldn’t cost you that much at all. It is important to plan ahead and work out exactly what you want from your exhaust system. Consider things such as volume, note, price and power before committing to a certain exhaust system.

Luckily the piping on the factory exhaust system on Honda Civic’s is generally very small. There are a number of reasons for this but the main one is that car have to be manufactured to comply with certain regulations which limit the noise output. The simple (and cheapest) solution for Honda is to make the exhausts piping very small. Unfortunately this also limits power.

The four pipes coming of the back (or some case front) of the cylinder head is referred to as the exhaust manifold or more commonly the header. This is one of the most restrictive parts in the factory exhausts system and must be upgraded in order to yield more power. There are two main types of aftermarket exhaust manifold and they are the 4-2-1 system and the 4-1 system. If you look closely at the factory system you will notice that the pipes converge into the pipes and then again into one. This is referred to as a 4-2-1 system and is useful for making mid range horsepower that is very usable. The other option, the 4-1 system, is where the 4 pipes converge into 1 at the same location. The advantage to this system is that it will produce the most peak horsepower, good for motor-sport where the vehicle will receive constant high RPM use.

The next and smallest piece of the exhaust system is the catalytic converter. Any aftermarket cat will be a huge upgrade and make sure there is no bottleneck in your exhaust system.

The rest of the exhaust is called the B-pipe and this is the most commonly upgraded part. It consists of piping and the muffler, both of which have an effect on the sound of the exhaust system. Higher power engines require larger diameter exhausts piping to quickly extract the gasses away from the engine.

By upgrading all the component of the Honda Civic exhausts system you should be able to see some impressive gains when it comes to horsepower as well as sound. Now go and show off that system!
